Free ringtones using only itunes.

Fairly simple tutorial today and a recommended read for all readers of this blog, as to be honest, the majority of ringtones shipping on iPhone are pretty boring in my opinion. Everyone likes to add a little customisation to their phone and assigning a custom ringtone is a very simple and basic way to achieve this. This method does not require your phone to be jailbroken.

Note: Although you can purchase ringtones directly from the itunes store, I would not recommend this as the method I will outline below is extremely simple and perfectly legal.

The method (for mac users)

- Open itunes and find the song you wish to use as your ringtone.
- Click "itunes" in the top left hand corner of the screen, next to the apple logo.
- Click "preferences"
- Click the "import settings" button.
- Ensure that in the "import using" field, "AAC encoder" is selected.

- Right click on the song you wish to use as a ringtone.
- Click "get info"
- Click the "options" tab.
- In the fields "start time" and "stop time" enter the times of the song you wish to start your ringtone at and where you wish your ringtone to end. It is recommended that you make this length around 20 seconds, as longer ringtones may not work. You may wish to listen to your song first a few times to choose your favourite part.
- Click Ok when this is done, and select your song so it is highlighted blue.
- Click "advanced' in the menu right at the top of your OSX screen.
- Click create AAC version.
- When this is complete, a new file will appear in your itunes library that you have just created, this should be the part of your song you wish to use as your ringtone.
- Right click this file and click "show in finder"
- Click on the file highlighted in blue and change the .m4a part of the filename to .m4r
- Drag the file into your itunes library
- Sync your iphone ensuring ringtones are set to synchronise when your iPhone is plugged in.
